Residential Security Features
Security systems have evolved substantially in the last
three years and new alarm systems provide sophisticated deterrent,
prevention and detection features. Below we list the common
functions found in up-to-date security systems. Please note that not
all features are part of the security panel itself - they may implemented
by other (additional) devices.
The list below
may help you to compare proposals from various security vendors and represents
the "state of the art" in mid-2003. Please remember that for full integration
with a lifestyle automation system, your choice of security must be
able to communicate (using RS232, RS485 or tcp/ip) with the Main Control
Unit as well as being capable of exposing key information (status,
sensor info and remote arm/disarm are the key ones).
Arming / Disarming functions:
- key fob
arm / disarm.
- partial
arm/disarm (zoned security).
- warning
if doors/windows left open at unlock.
- (automatic
closing doors/windows/garage/gates/ballasts).
Disarmed
(passive) functions:
- outer
perimeter breach detection.
- car
approaching detection (if drive/forecourt).
- doorbell
redirected to house phone extensions with voicemail back up.
- doorbell
with photographic log.
- presence
in rooms (with pet filter) detection.
- card access to restricted zones/doors.
- fire/smoke detection.
- flooding detection.
- multiple panic button (wired / wireless).
Armed (active) functions:
- outer
perimeter breach detection.
- car
approaching detection (if drive).
- doorbell
redirected to external phone/mobile with voicemail back up.
- doorbell with photographic log.
- phone supervision (checks that phone line has not been cut) or BT RedCare/FireCare.
- breach of inner perimeter detection (e.g. broken window).
- zoned intruder detection.
- fire/smoke detection.
- flooding detection.
- alarm to phone / ARC (alarm reception system).
- alarm to SMS or email with pic attachment.
- deterrent sound effects: voice, dog, bell, siren
- deterrent visual effects: light sequencing recording.
- PA warning to intruder.
- internal barriers.
- Netcam/CCTV log.
- duress code (used if forced to disarm).
- remote reset (a requirement if connection to ARC).
- false alarm protection.
Interface/Communication features:
- RS232/RS485 or TCP/IP connectivity.
- arm/unarmed status output.
- event triggers / event log output (up to a 100 or 250).
- remote arm/disarm (password protected).
Other common features:
- 6 to 12 hr battery back up.
- built-in modem.
- automatic summer/winter time adjustment.
